ADMISSIONS
Since opening in 1992, Clarinda has provided life-changing opportunities for over 7,500 students.
Who We Serve
Clarinda Academy serves male and female youth, aged 12 – 18, with a full scale IQ above 65. Students at Clarinda have a range of behavioral and emotional issues that prevent them from being able to function in the community, including: low degree of empathy for others; poor means-ends reasoning; impulsivity; anger control and aggression problems; antisocial values and behaviors; lack of self-discipline; counteractivity and non-compliance with authority. Many Clarinda students have had traumatic and/or social experiences that cause them to act out by either hurting themselves or causing an offense. Clarinda also serves youth with mild to moderate mental health issues.
Clarinda does not accept youth with severe mental health issues who need the services of a psychiatric hospital; nor youth who have committed a sexual offense and not received prior treatment. We enroll pregnant female students until the beginning of the third trimester of pregnancy.
Referral Process
Referrals are initiated by a referring worker or parent contacting the Admissions Department. Student information should be sent to the Admissions Coordinator, including the student’s demographics, background and materials from other placements, psychological evaluations and court documents. Prospective students are interviewed by phone or in person. Decisions regarding acceptance are typically made within 48 hours. Upon acceptance, information about the program and necessary intake forms are sent to the referring worker and parent/guardian. Admission times vary based on student readiness and availability of beds.
